Understand what the web actually does.

Plain explanations of cookies, tracking, fingerprinting, and browser security. Sourced, dated, and free of scare tactics. You do not need to install anything to read any of it.

Our editorial rules

Everything here separates what is known from what is likely from what is inference. Entries carry sources and a last-reviewed date. If we get something wrong, we correct it and say that we did.

We do not use fear to make a point. Most third parties on a page are doing a job somebody asked for. The interesting question is never "is there a cookie" — it is "who benefits from this one".
